Our Digital Library

January has proven to be an exciting month in our library. Grade 3 - 5 students have created their own accounts for the library website and now are able to perform many tasks using the Destiny program. Students cannot only use the catalogue tab to look for books in our library, but they can also create holds on books, create personal lists, rate books, comment on books and recommend books to their friends. This has encouraged many students to become more actively involved in our school library. Keep up the good work everyone!

Our library has also been the recipent of 2 ereaders - a Kindle and a Kobo. Students will be permitted to sign out the ereaders and take them to their classrooms. The ereaders however, will have to remain in the school, due to possible damage or loss. As well, our library has purchased a number of e-books to add to our library collection. Soon, students will have the opportunity to sign out these e-books as they do for other library books. Students will then be able to read their e-books using their home computers. This is just another way to expose students to our new world of reading.
We look forward to upgrading our technology in the library!

Library Book Club

During the month of November, Grade 5 students are invited to the library on Day 5's from 12:35 to 1:10 p.m. to listen to the story entitled The Stolen Child, written by Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch. This story takes place just after the Second World War and reflects the Remembrance Day theme for the month of November. Following the reading, students will participate in a book talk, discussing the main issues portrayed in the this very touching story. This book is one of the books nominated for the 2012 Willow Award and can be considered one of the student's books read or listened in order for the student to be eligible to vote in the Willow Awards Reading Program.

Willow Awards

The Grade 4 and 5 students are invited to participate in the Willow Awards Reading Program. Students are invited to read at least 4 out of 10 books which are nominated to receive the Willow Award. These books are written by Saskatchewan and Canadian authors. In late February, students will vote for the book which they felt was the best. Their votes will be tallied up and sent to join the other votes taken throughout the province. The author that receives the most votes provincially will be the recipient of the Saskatchewan Willow Award for 2012. Good luck to all students who participate in this reading program.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back! The P. J. Gillen Library is up and running and we are looking forward to sharing the love of reading with all of the students in our school.
Check out the Library Blog to get updated on the library news.
As well, peruse the P. J. Gillen Library website at:

http://library.gssd.ca

You and your child can take a look at our library resources right in your own homes. Students can return to school knowing exactly what they want, making it easier to check out resources.

The library is sporting a new look, with the implementation of a smartboard, new furniture and accessories. Thank you to Mrs. Davis for donating the lovely water fountain which has created a beautiful, tranquil atmosphere for all visitors to our library.
Look for more changes occurring, with the introduction of E books and other digital resources, as well as some new and exciting library programs.
The library is the place to be this year at P. J. Gillen School!
