5-Finger Rule

One of the book selection strategies being taught to the students at our school is the 5-Finger Rule for Book Selection. Students are asked to choose a book of interest to read. They are then asked to select a page in the book to read. For each word that the student cannot read, he/she puts 1 finger up.
0 fingers - the book is too easy - you may want to abandon the book
1 - 3 fingers - the book is just right for this student
4 fingers - go slow - you may want to choose another book
5 fingers - the book is too hard for this student - abandon the book
When students use this method of book selection, they find that they are choosing books of interest as well as reading ability allowing for a much more exciting reading experience.
